Code-Compliant Deck Railing for Your Existing Deck

Deck railing is the safety barrier surrounding any elevated deck — and in New Jersey, it's not optional. State residential code requires railings on all decks 30 inches or more above grade, and the railings must meet specific height and structural standards. A properly installed deck railing protects your family, satisfies inspection requirements, and adds the finished aesthetic to complete the deck.

Fred's Fence installs deck railing systems for residential properties across Monmouth and Middlesex Counties. We work with your existing deck — we don't currently install decks themselves. Whether you have a brand-new deck that needs railing finished out, or an older deck where the railing has weathered and needs replacement, we handle the railing installation start to finish, including code compliance and permits.

All our deck railing installations include written, itemized quotes, manufacturer material warranties (lifetime on aluminum, vinyl, and composite), and our 5-year labor warranty. Choosing between materials? Our Wood vs. Vinyl guide breaks down the same tradeoffs that apply to railing materials.

Deck Railing Materials We Install

We install five different deck railing materials to match your aesthetic preferences, your existing deck, and your budget. Each has its own strengths.

Aluminum Railing (Most Popular)

Powder-coated aluminum with ornamental detail. Looks like wrought iron without the maintenance — no rust, no painting, no upkeep. Available in black, white, bronze, and other finishes. Lifetime material warranty.

Vinyl Railing (Popular)

White or beige vinyl rail systems that match vinyl decking and trim. Lifetime material warranty, zero maintenance, won't rot or warp. Clean, contemporary look for modern decks.

Wood Railing

Cedar or pressure-treated wood railings for traditional decks. Most affordable option, but requires periodic refinishing every 3-5 years. 5-year labor warranty on installation.

Composite Railing

Premium composite material that matches Trex and similar composite deck boards. Wood-like aesthetics without the maintenance. Lifetime material warranty.

Cable Railing

Stainless steel cable systems for modern, view-preserving decks. Aluminum or wood posts with horizontal cable runs. Maintains sightlines while meeting code requirements.

NJ Deck Railing Code Requirements

New Jersey residential code sets specific requirements for deck railings to ensure safety. We install every railing to meet or exceed these standards — and handle the permit and inspection process for you.

NJ Residential Railing Code Basics

  • Decks under 30 inches above grade: No railing legally required (but recommended)
  • Decks 30+ inches above grade: Railing required, minimum 36 inches tall
  • Decks 30+ inches above grade with elevated views: Railing typically 42 inches tall
  • Maximum gap between balusters: Cannot allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through (4-inch rule)
  • Bottom rail gap: Maximum 4 inches between deck surface and bottom rail
  • Structural strength: Railing must withstand 200 pounds of horizontal force at any point

We typically install railings at 36 inches for standard residential decks and 42 inches for decks with higher elevation or where homeowners want extra security. Every installation includes appropriate balusters, bottom rails, and code-compliant structural attachment to the deck.
